A great day at the races

During October half-term a group of members headed to Lingfield Park Racecourse in Surrey to watch a day of pony racing organised by The Pony Club.

The day provided a great opportunity for four of our young members as they work towards the ultimate experience – to take part in a real race in the spring next year.

Our young people were introduced to pony racing during the summer holidays, and since then have received expert tuition from our yard manager, Dan Cook, and visiting trainers, Patrick Scott from Appletree Stud, and Ollie Mcphail from The British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust.

Not only are our members practising on the ponies, but we also have an equisisor in Brixton to help improve their balance and develop their core body strength just like professional jockeys.

The trip to Lingfield Park was designed to give our young people a taste for a real-life race meeting, to help them gain a better understanding of the sport and what they are working towards. It was also the first time they had been to see racing before.

It was an exciting day with plenty of races to watch and people to cheer on – including several riders from Park Lane Stables that we had met earlier in the year.

There were lots of celebrations when one of the Park Lane jockeys won their race by a considerable distance.

The day was rounded off by a very special meeting with HRH, The Princess Royal who was there to watch the races as Patron of The Pony Club.

One of our members got the opportunity to talk to her about Ebony Horse Club and their ambitions to become a pony jockey.

Everyone came home from the visit full of motivation and ready to work even harder in preparation for the spring.

We rely on generous grants from charitable trusts, fundraising support and donations from individuals to ensure we can provide much-needed services and support to children and young people in the local community. Find out how you can help by visiting our support us page.
